Order A Copy Of “Geek Girls Unite”
Yes, it's true! Geek Girls Unite is out now! If you haven't picked up your copy of Geek Girls Unite: How Fangirls, Bookworms, Indie Chicks, and Other Misfits Are Taking Over the World, then what are you waiting for?
I really enjoyed the book, if wanting to make my friends read it by the time I reached page 2 and plowing through it in three hours even though I’m supposed to be doing something else is any indication.
Having completed the GGG surveys and all, I was really surprised how much the book taught me about myself. Skill level aside (and really, I am my own worst critic), apparently I secretly am a Domestic Goddess. Even more than I’m a Literary Geek, which blew my mind. I do the DIY thing, but it’s a mix of boredom, lack of funds, and the certain knowledge I’d be just as dissatisfied with something storebought but this way I have no one to blame but myself.
If I had one criticism about the book, it would be that it does still paint a rather heterosexual image of geek girls. I’m a geek girl who wants to find another geek girl to cuddle up with to marathon Doctor Who.
But I seem to remember a section of the book near the end where you tell us to contact you with our other geeky obsessions and there’s one type of geek I am that definitely wasn’t mentioned:
Anglophile Geek.
You know, the girl who slips into a British accent when she’s in a good mood or really agitated and can’t help it, even though she’s never been across the pond. The girl whose lexicon is more British than American. With a Union Jack hanging on the wall, a habit of going all the way across town to get McVities bickies because they’re the proper kind, and the desire to put a tea cosy on her head if she sees one. The girl who rejoiced when the local grocer finally started carrying PG Tips. The girl who watches the BBC damn near exclusively even though America obviously doesn’t have it (and really, BBC America hardly counts). The girl who swoons every time David Mitchell starts ranting and giggles when Jimmy Carr posts some clever wordplay on twitter. The girl who knows British politics better than her own – and can sit down and tell you who David Cameron and Nick Clegg are, and just why the coalition government isn’t working.
